Victoria’s Beautiful Butterfly Gardens
Welcome to the Jungle!
The Butterfly Gardens, located just five minutes from the Butchard Gardens, are a tropical destination on an already oasis of an island. The Butterfly Gardens are kept at 25 degrees celsius with a steady 80% humidity. So wear your shorts and bring some water!
You’re invited to walk through a tropical climate while Caribbean flamingos wade through the streams and ponds scattered throughout. You’ll also be delighted by the coloured koi, goldfish, albino oscars, and Australian whistling tree ducks,
The Butterfly Gardens boast a dynamic variety of plants, insect and animal life. They cultivate two hundred different types of orchids alone, and thousands of other plant and animal species from around the world! Let yourself be amazed while witnessing the entire life cycle of butterflies and moths at the emerging room window, and again throughout the Gardens while they perch on the tropical plants.
A Tropical Island
Have you ever wondered what organic vanilla beans look like before they make it into your favourite ice cream? Or Papaya trees, Pineapple, Coffee beans, or ginger? The folks at the Butterfly Garden grow all of these exotic foods in completely organic soil, and they never use pesticides or herbicides.
Green Thumbs and Green Bugs
The Butterfly Gardens really emphasize their green thumb, and green conscience. They’ve been awarded the Gold Sustainability Seal for their efforts. From the gift shop where every bit of packaging is recyclable (often at their own expense) to the use of solely natural cleaning products, the Butterfly Gardens have set the green standard. This past year they covered their 12,000 square foot greenhouse with a 6ml poly membrane which reduces heat loss by creating “dead airspace.”
Respect for imitating the natural habitat of the animals, butterflies and waterlife at the Butterfly Gardens is a priority. For example, many of the birds and exoitc animals taken care of at the Butterfly Gardens were donated by those not able to care for them long term. None of the animals are ever caged or put on display. The fish swim free in over 15,000 gallons of water. Every animal from the tiny button quail to the tree frogs, geckos and parrots roam free. After all, we are the guests in their habitats.
Take the whole family for a visit, group and family rates are available, as are guided tours. The Butterfly Gardens are open 10:00am to 5:00pm during the Summer season. Check out their website for Off Season hours.
